These guys converted a Harley-Davidson street motorcycle into an off-road sidecar racing bike to be in the next Paris-Dakar (which is really the Lisboa-Dakar this year).
KTM motorcycles are the most common entrant in the Rally- so you can see how drastically different the above rig is.
The stage run uses Google Earth. It is about 50mb. They posted it to their blog.
This is an amazing use of Google Earth- while the route probably isn\'t 100% perfect to what the final will be, it lets them plan the route in a lot more detail than a paper map might give.
You might also want to check out the Dakar06 website and route.
Dakar05 was marred with tragedy. It isn\'t that uncommon, really- it is very dangerous, passes through hostile zones and countries, and deals with extreme weather conditions. That makes the satellite planning that much more useful.
